Mark had set everything out for their ride before he left for town, so when he and Leah headed to the barn it didn’t take them long to saddle up the horses and attach their gear. Mark always carried a shotgun and bear spray with him. He also gave the same to Leah. As all cowgirls were, she was proficient with multiple weapons and obviously had her own bear spray that she carried. But Mark wanted to make sure she had enough. The spray worked on plenty of wildlife as well as goons.

He wished she would have carried her spray into the rodeo so she could have stopped Rocko sooner, but it did work out in the end.

Once they were on their horses and heading out, Mark thought it was a good time to tell her the latest about Bart. “So, I heard from the sheriff earlier today.” He cringed.

Leah accidentally pulled back the reins and her mount stopped. “What’s happened?”

It wasn’t terror that Mark heard in her voice, but there was definitely worry and maybe apprehension? He needed to make sure she didn’t worry, but still kept an eye out. “Rocko isn’t getting bail. The judge denied it. But he somehow retained the services of a good lawyer. An expensive one.”

She clicked her tongue and nudged her horse forward. They were taking this trip at a slow, leisurely pace to start since there were too many barriers where they were. She knew from experience that once they were out in the open fields, they’d be able to let the horses have their head.

Before she responded to what Mark said, she took a moment to think about it. “How could a homeless thug afford an expensive attorney?”

“That’s what the sheriff wants to know. He thinks there might be some sort of organized crime behind what Bart and his goons are doing. And that’s why the Bozeman sheriff hasn’t been able to get anything on them.”

She sighed. “That would make a lot of sense. At first I thought that sheriff might be involved somehow. But if it’s organized crime, then maybe he isn’t involved.”

“He could be getting pressured, or threatened.” Mark looked around all of a sudden.

The hair on Leah’s neck pricked, and she looked, too. “Are we being watched?”

“Might be.” He winced. “I’m sorry, but I think we should turn around. I don’t know if there’s danger, but with both of us feeling as though we’re being watched, it’s most likely the case.”

“I swear, if I ever get a chance I’m going to bop Bart right in the nose. He’s done nothing but ruin every date we’ve had so far.” Leah turned her horse around and narrowed her gaze into the trees in the distance.

Mark pulled out his cellphone. “I’m calling the sheriff.”

The phone rang only once before he picked up. “Mark, what can I do for ya?”

“I’m out in the back forty with Leah, and we think someone’s out here watching us.”

“That’s what I was afraid of.” The sigh that came over the phone was loud and heavy.
